Carstenz Adventure

Climbing Carstensz Pyramid is now much better after a new trekking route known as Sugapa route was discovered.

Sugapa / Bilogai Aerial View

Sugapa route was not popular or even not known as all the agents in Indonesia thought that there were no ways to get to the Carstensz basecamp through this route and therefore they always choosed Ilaga for trekking expedition instead.
In the beginning of 2005, Rudy Ruus started to gather all available information regarding the possibility to use Sugapa as starting point for trekking as he heard that some locals when hunting sometimes passed a point where snow sometimes falls. The investigation was started by meeting and talking with students known from Sugapa who are studying in Manado, North Sulawesi. The effort was not in vain at all. Rudy managed to get some contacts in Sugapa who promised to help Rudy with the mission untill at last a survey trekking expedition to Carstensz Basecamp was executed to no fail.

Carstensz Climbing Expedition by trekking

Experience the excitement of trekking through a vital tropical rainforest with vast biodiversity of flora and fauna. The opportunity to watch closer the ancient tribal cultures of Papua. The natural wealth of the New Guinea Island is immense and immeasurable. Even if you were there thousand times you wouldn’t see everything. The trekking is started at 2300 m above sea level which makes it a perfect elevation for acclimatization. Started from Sugapa/Bilogai the 5 days trekking will pass 5 small traditional Papua villages namely Mamba, Titiji, Janamba, Kulapa and Itutah with their unique houses (honai) and primitive way of life before entering a densely forested area home to the birds of paradise (Cendrawasih) and other interesting fauna. The fun continues as the elevation changes until a reward of an amazingly beautiful display of open landscape covered with ferny trees contrasted to lovely tiny flowers and lakes, near New Zealand pass struck every eyes.

Carstensz Climbing Expedition by helicopter

This option is the fastest Carstensz climbing expedition and suitable for those who have time limit.
The climbers will be taken to the basecamp at 4330 m and then get picked-up after the summit days.
During the helicopter trip, a breathtaking view of West Papua nature, a combination of jungle canopies and mountain ridges will amaze any eyes along the trip.

Combined Trekking and Helicopter Expedition

This option is the combination of trekking and helicopter of Carstensz Pyramid expeditions. The ascent is by trekking via Sugapa and descent by helicopter (default program) or vice versa. A perfect choice for those who have limited time but still want to have much more than just climbing.

The chance to witness the still existing stone-age culture of the local people combined with the exotic nature of Papua and with the advantage of having proper acclimatization as the trekking up to the base camp is started from 2300 m and then having a helicopter pick-up service when the state of exhaustion just slowly occupies after summit days, makes this choice of Carstensz Pyramid climbing expedition would be just the way you want it.
