Tanjung Puting National Park (South Western of Borneo)

Tanjung Puting National Park was originally the the Tanjung Puting Wildlife Preserve combination of the Sampit Nature Preserve and Kotawaringin Wild Preserve, set by Dutch Colonial Government in 1936, covering an area of 305,000 hectares for protection of orangutan and proboscis monkey. The government of Indonesia announced it as a national park in 1984 with the area about 300,040 hectares. Then in 1996, the area come to be 415,040 hectares comprising the Tanjung Putting Wildlife Preserve of 300,040 Hectares, former production forest of 90,000 hectares and area of water territory of around 25,000 hectares. It is a conservation area to protect rare animals such as; orangutan, proboscis monkey, hornbill, etc. The area is also a kind of ecosystem of lowland tropical rainforest, swamp and mangrove forest.

Day 01 : Pangkalan Bun Arrival – Tanjung Puting National Park

  • Meet at airport and directly transfer to Kumai district for boarding the houseboat to Tanjung Puting National Park. The houseboat is a traditional Klotok, wooden river boat about 6m by 2m with a roof forms the upper deck where you can view the rainforest as it glides by.
  • The boat crew including the boatman, cook and expert guide. In the peaceful afternoon, we will slowly explore the quite river by the klotok while observing the primates along the riverside.
  • Overnight and dining on houseboat, with facilities; thin mattress, pillow, fine meals, bottled "mineral" water, mosquito net, kitchen, and simple toilet available on boat besides the familiar helpful guides and boatmen. (L,D)

Day 02 : Tanjung Puting National Park

  • After breakfast, we will board the klotok for boating upward to Pondok Tanguy for exploring the rehabilitation center of the new ex-captive orangutans.
  • Next, return to houseboat for cruising upward the creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest.
  • At this station, you will have opportunity to trek into the rainforest with your expert guide and forest rangers to appreciate the flora as well as viewing wild orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and birds.
  • Lunch will be served on houseboat. In the afternoon, we will visit the feeding station to see rehabilitated orangutans are given additional foods.
  • We will then sail back down the river and overnight on houseboat. (B,L,D)

Day 03 : Departure

  • Free at your own leisure till the proper time for transfering to airport for your next destination. (B)
