Sengkang, the capital of a former Bugis kingdom, this historic and bustling market town overlooking Lake Tempe retains its traditional character, as well as many old cultural traditions, silk weaving, colourful bugis weddings-celebrated, according to Ancient customs, dance, and a traditional orchestra.
Sengkang located about 250 kilometers from Makassar and it takes about 5 hours by bus or Kijang. Lake Tempe is a shallow lake fringed by wetlands with traditional floating houses and a large population of wonderful birdlife. Lake Tempe is the place to be for ornithologists. You can go by long tail boat on the huge lake and you will visit a traditional floating house and you can drink tea or coffee and eating fried banana (Pisang Goreng) with the locals. We respect the flora & fauna, so we will not come to close to the birds, so we don’t disturb them and so we safe this wonderful place near Sengkang. Sengkang was a former Bugis kingdom capital. The city has still old traditions character like; silk weavings and markets.
A village that is really unique, around 30 houses inhabited by traditional fishermen in the middle of the vast Tempe lake. There the fishermenlive their daily-life by fishing, drying some riverfishes and other activities
This place can be reached by a traditional boat for about one hours from the harbour of Tempe. Along the trip you might be seeing some various types of birds of the lake, flying in a row or settling on the grass or flowers that live floating houses in the middle of the lake.
The lakeside resort of Sengkang between Bone and Pare-pare has only recently been discovered by foreign tourist. Scenic Danau Tempe, a large shallow lake fringed by wetlands, is the main attraction and is best admired on a boat trip. Geologist believe the lake was once a gulf between southern Toraja and the rest of South Sulawesi. As they merged, the gulf disappeared and it is thought the lake will eventually disappear too.
There are floating houses, magnificent bird life, and a range of commercial activities on the lake. Lake tours usually take in Batu-Batu on the other side, but the most interesting part is along the river around Sengkang.
Sengkang - Well known for its silk weaving and therefore is the center of Buginese silk. The capital city of Wajo regency is welcoming you to explore the area.
Tempe lake is one of the most beautifull lake in Indonesia, where you can see the Wajo people who spend their own life activities is on the water forever. Exotic sunset is enjoyable on the way back from visits the people.

Sengkang Regency located at South Sulawesi and become one of tourism destinations. The capital city of Sengkang Regency is Wajo in about 242 kms to the northeast of Makassar. Sengkang well know and famous with Silk Weaving and therefore is the center of Buginese silk, a great amount of multi colored silk for clothing and sarong, are widely sold in many silk shops and studios in the regency.

The boundaries area of Sengkang Regency is :
North : Luwu and Sidrap.
South : District Soppeng and Bone.
East : Gulf of Bone.
West : District Soppeng and Sidrap.
Lake Tempe - is a tourism destination in South Sulawesi province that are frequently visited by tourists either domestic or foreign. The lake, which is 13.000 hectare in width, seems like a giant washbasin when it is viewed from above. Subsistence for people living around, it is not only used by the inhabitants of Wajo Regency, but also other people in the other regency of Soppeng and Sidrap. Along the lakeside, you can observe the fishermen`s floating houses which were built in Bugis nuance, standing in a row directly face to the lake.
Lake Tempe is the biggest wetland fishery area in the world. It is assumed that the lake is located on the meeting point of two continents. Therefore, many wetland fish species can be found there than the other places in Indonesia.
In the middle of the lake, the floating fisherman village stand in a row decorated with colorful flags and can be reached by Traditional boats about one hour from Tempe port. Above those, you can watch sunrise or sunset in the same position while enjoying various species of birds, fishes and water grasses. At night, it is the right time to angle for fishes while enjoying the beauty of moon lighting the lake.
As they produce silk everyday in a year, you can be there anytime you want!
